Our public school students are top class

Public school students have again dominated the HSC honours securing 71 of the 126 First in Course awards announced today.

Among the high achievers, Sariena Ye from James Ruse Agricultural High School became only the fourth person since 1991 to secure first place in both Chemistry and Physics – and the first female in 27 years to top both subjects.

NSW Education Secretary Mark Scott congratulated the winners and also paid tribute to every student that had completed their HSC in 2020.

“Those students who received a First in Course – and their families - should be rightly proud of their achievements,” Mr Scott said.

“Considering the particular challenges of 2020, we are extremely proud of every student that has shown the determination and resilience to achieve their best and finish their HSC.

“They now leave school with the skills to embark upon a successful life, no matter what they choose next.”

Public school students secured First in Course across a range of subject areas including, among others, three of the five mathematics and English courses, chemistry and physics, science extension, Aboriginal studies, economics, ancient history, languages and visual arts.

Mr Scott said the diversity of subjects topped by public school students showed NSW Education was committed to quality education across all fields of endeavour.

“Our success in the HSC is also a tribute to the quality of teaching and dedication of staff in supporting our students during their final year of schooling.”

The First in Course winners this year came from a wider selection of schools with James Ruse Agricultural High School the most successful school overall, securing six First in Course positions.

Schools Spectacular remixed for television

Relive memorable acts and performances from the past four years in a special televised Schools Spectacular event.

The annual Schools Spectacular, cancelled this year due to the pandemic, will entertain audiences with a special television broadcast next week.

The Schools Spectacular 2020 Remixed will air on Channel 7 on Saturday 5 December at 7pm.

The two-hour broadcast will feature memorable acts and spectacular moments from the past four years.

The show will also feature a surprise digital performance from this year’s graduating Class of 2020 with the Year 12 students sharing their passion and talents while celebrating with NSW Education for one last time.

This technical feat aims to inspire audiences as more than 70 dancers, singers, instrumental musicians and signing performers from across NSW assemble virtually for the performance.

Mark Scott, Secretary of the NSW Department of Education, said this event is an opportunity to revisit memories of past performances and celebrate the talents of students in NSW public schools.

“Schools Spectacular 2020 Remixed will be an extraordinary broadcast and a unique opportunity to look back at some of the many achievements of our talented performing arts students and their hard working and committed teachers from the past four years,” he said.

Audiences can also share their own memories and see highlights from past Schools Spectacular performances on the Schools Spectacular Facebook page.

Schools Spectacular Remixed 2020 is produced by the NSW Department of Education and proudly supported by Presenting Partners, Telstra and the NSW Teachers Federation, and Segment Partner, RØDE Microphones.

Join in the virtual NAIDOC Week celebrations

Education celebrates NAIDOC Week 2020 (8 – 15 November 2020) with the theme ‘Always Was, Always Will Be’.

It’s a time to reflect and celebrate the history, culture and achievements of the First Nation peoples – recognising them as the traditional owners of the land.

Schools were invited to film and submit videos to celebrate history, culture and achievements of past and present Aboriginal and Torres Strait students.

Secretary, Mark Scott will give an opening address on Monday, 9 November and then Aboriginal students run a Question and Answers session with Mark Scott, Cindy Berwick, President of the NSW AECG; Martin Graham, Deputy Secretary; Michelle Hall, Executive Director, Connecetd Communities and Karen Jones, Executive Director, Aboriginal Outcomes and Partnerships.

Tuesday will showcase how NSW public schools are embedding Aboriginal cultural practices. Special thanks to; Windale Public School Preschool, Terrigal Public School, Wilcannia Central School and Murrumbidgee Regional High School for participating.

Wednesday will highlight the outstanding achievements of Benson Igua Saulo, In-coming Consul-General to the US based in Houston (2021), as his is interviewed by current students from his former schools, Tamworth High School and Peel High School.

Thursday will see Uncle Michael Jarrett deliver a Gumbaynggirr language lesson.

Friday will close out our virtual celebration with a beautiful virtual choir led by Uncle Archie Roach. Students will join him singing ‘Took the children away’ and ‘Children came back’.

To support a strong start to 2021, school staff will now have two school development days at the beginning of Term 1.

For 2021, students will return to school on Friday 29 January (or Friday 5 February for Western division), unless otherwise notified by the school. School term dates for 2021 are now available.

Western division schools, also known as ‘late start’ schools, are located in the far western region of NSW. Check if your school is a Late start school.

Bass High school has just subscribed to an online book platform/service from a company called OVERDRIVE.

This service provides our students and all staff with access to approximately 2000 online books ranging from popular children's fiction to many adult classics.

There are also a number of audio books you can borrow.

To access this library you will need to download an APP called SORA by overdrive.

Once you open the APP you will be asked what school you are from and you will need to type in Bass High School.

Once in this section you will be asked to logon. You will use your DEPARTMENTAL logon and password. You can use this service at anytime from any location.

Please feel free to explore and borrow. If you have any issues accessing the service please contact me ASAP so I can have them resolved with the provider.

Updates to COVID-19 restrictions affecting NSW schools

Latest COVID-19 case locations in NSW

NSW Health has a website to inform you of the actions you should take if you have been in a location where there have been confirmed cases of COVID-19 within NSW. Monitor the site and follow the relevant health advice if you have been at any of the locations at the specified dates and times.

Students and staff who have travelled through or visited Victoria

All students and staff who have visited Victoria must have a permit to enter NSW and are required to self-isolate for 14 days.

Except for students and staff who reside in a border town, all students and staff who have visited Victoria in the 14 days before the commencement of school should not attend school until they complete the 14 days self-isolation period since they left Victoria.

Students and staff who are unable to return to school due to these self-isolation requirements will be supported to learn and work remotely during the self-isolation period via the online learning hubs until they return to on-campus learning and teaching.

NSW Health has requested anyone who has been in Victoria and is unwell or has flu-like symptoms arrange to be tested through their local medical practitioner or one of the COVID-19 clinics.

Refer to current advice for people who have recently visited Victoria.

Information for students and staff on new NSW-Victoria border restrictions

The NSW Government has announced further tightening to the restrictions for people travelling across the NSW-Victorian border.

From midnight Tuesday 21 July a border zone, defined along the Murray River, will be established.

Anyone travelling from Victoria to NSW must apply for a new permit through Service NSW.

Victorian residents who have been in one of the restricted areas in Victoria in the last 14 days must not enter NSW.

Attending schools along the border

Current permits will expire at midnight, Tuesday 21 July. We strongly encourage all parents and staff to check they have a permit and if not, apply for one through Service NSW.

Students and staff who reside in Victoria will need to be eligible for a border permit to attend school in person.

Under the new public health order, the border zone has been reduced significantly.

Not all students and staff may be eligible for a border permit under the public health order. If you are not eligible for a border permit you will not be able to cross the border. Students and staff will be supported through remote learning and working via the online learning hubs until they return to school.

Further information on the new border zone is available from Service NSW.

Border permits can be rescinded at any time if a cluster outbreak in your community occurs. We encourage parents to monitor local circumstances regularly as things may change in the coming days or weeks.

Transport to and from school will run as scheduled. For travel advice to and from school refer to Transport for NSW.

New restrictions affecting boarding schools

Any student returning from Victoria to reside at a boarding school in NSW must now self-isolate for 14 days in a NSW location separate to the boarding school. They must also obtain a negative test swab from day 10 of their isolation before entering school and have written confirmation of the test result and the period spent isolating.

Those who are unable to return to boarding while they are completing the self-isolation period will be supported through remote learning and working via the online learning hubs until they return to school.

Our school will be open to welcome students back to onsite learning from the beginning of Term 3 – Tuesday 21 July 2020.

As you would be aware the border between NSW and Victoria closed as of 12:01am 8 July 2020.

Curriculum reform focuses on deep learning

Changes to the NSW school curriculum will be the biggest education shake-up in 30 years.

The reforms, announced by the NSW Government on Tuesday, will start rolling out in 2021. All Kindergarten to Year 12 students will learn the new curriculum by 2024.

The changes are in response to the NSW Curriculum Review by Professor Geoff Masters and will ensure every student is prepared and ready for their future.

The reforms are based on:

decluttering the curriculum by reducing unnecessary subjects
a ‘back to basics approach’ that will see a renewed focus on the core subjects of English, maths and science
Year 11 and Year 12 prequalification for university and TAFE courses.

Education Week 2020 will be held from Monday 3 August to Friday 7 August.

Education Week is our annual week of celebration to highlight the achievements of our students and staff and the role of public schools as the cornerstone of their communities.

This year’s theme is ‘Learning together’ and it reflects the incredible months of 2020 where NSW public school students have continued to learn and achieve, despite natural disasters and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Our schools have experienced significant disruption but our staff – in partnership with parents and carers – have worked tirelessly to ensure that high quality teaching and learning has continued for all students.

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott said the best learning takes place when there is a partnership of students, teachers, parents, carers and the community.

“Our schools and families benefit from strong, respectful relationships where responsibility for student learning is shared,” Mr Scott said.

“As our lives slowly return to normal, it’s time for us to reflect on the achievements and resilience of our entire school community. We look forward to celebrating Education Week with all of you in August.”

Statewide events for Education Week include:

Students across NSW will be back in the classroom full-time from next Monday, 25 May.

The success of the phased return to face to face teaching has demonstrated the education system and community are ready for school to come back full-time.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Minister for Education Sarah Mitchell thanked school communities and parents for their patience during this difficult time.

Ms Berejiklian said a return to full-time face to face teaching and learning is crucial for the education progress of every child in NSW from Kindergarten to Year 12.

“Since starting a managed return to the classroom, we have seen a strong degree of confidence from our school communities in managing COVID-19 and a clear desire for all students to be back at school,” Ms Berejiklian said.

“We expect schools to stick with the health advice – increased cleaning, access to hygiene supplies and compliance with hygiene practices – and look forward to seeing all students back on campus five days a week.

“The health advice is very clear; a return to full-time face to face teaching is safe.”

Over the last two weeks schools have been working hard to support students practise good hygiene and implement new routines at school, which has been successful giving the community confidence that full-time face to face teaching can resume.

Ms Mitchell said she was eager to see students back in the classroom full-time.

“Our principals, teachers, support staff, parents and carers have gone above and beyond to continue the education of our students while we respond to this pandemic,” Ms Mitchell said.

“My priority is the education of our children. We know that parents across NSW share our desire for students to be back in school, and that is our expectation.

“Schools will need to maintain the measures and precautions they have put in place for the foreseeable future, including no assemblies and excursions.

“Teachers will be focused on identifying where their students are at in their education and we will be supporting them to recognise and assist those students who need additional help.”

Social distancing and washing your hands remain the best ways to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

The COVIDSafe app, developed by the Australian Government, helps to reduce the spread by allowing health experts to find close contacts faster and more accurately.

The app does not track your location. It uses your phone's Bluetooth to record other users you come into contact with, so if they test positive, NSW Health can let you know.

The phased return will maintain distancing in the classroom while supporting students' education and wellbeing.

Most students will continue learning from home and will only attend school 1 day each week.

Our school will continue to provide detailed information about the return to the classroom throughout the rest of Term 2.

Measures to keep schools clean and safe for all students and staff include:

Religion and ethics lessons continue at home

Students learning from home can continue to access Special religious education (SRE) and Special education in ethics (SEE) classes.

Face-to-face SRE, SEE and Voluntary student activities of a religious nature in schools (VSA) will not be available until schools resume normal operations.

In response to requests from school communities, SRE and SEE approved providers are delivering their authorised curriculum with modifications to allow students to learn from home from the start of Term 2.

The lesson content and the mode of delivery has been reviewed and modified for easy access by students. The approved providers recognise that learning at home will not replicate face-to-face learning at school.

Good evening students, parents and guardians

Bass High School will be open this week for children of essential workers and vulnerable students. Year 12 Teachers have been inviting selected Year 12 classes into the school for lessons and their students are able to attend school for the duration of their class.

The following two weeks, Years 7 - 12 will be attending school for a minimum one day per week effective from the 11th of May. The school will continue to open for the children of essential workers and vulnerable students throughout this time.

The Term 2 phase 1 student attendance schedule will be as follows:

Monday 11th and 18th May - Year 7 From 9 - 2.30pm
Tuesday 12th and 19th May - Year 8 From 9 - 2.30pm
Wednesday 13th May and 20th May - Years 11 and 12 From 9 - 3pm
Thursday 14th May and 21st May - Years 9 and 10 From 9 - 3pm
Friday 15th May and 22nd May - Year 12 From 9 - 3pm

Online lessons will continue for all students during their non attendance days. On the day they attend, with the exception of Years 11 and 12, they will be completing the same work scheduled for students staying at home.

Year 12 Teachers will be able to bring selected classes back for further lessons on Monday and Tuesday. Some Year 12 Teachers will be using period 0 lessons and in both instances their students will be advised by their Teachers of the arrangements.

Social distancing procedures will be used including 10 - 15 students per room with one Teacher, staggered finishing times of 10 minutes where two year groups attend school and enhanced cleaning of high traffic areas. The canteen will be open for a limited time from the 11th May, further details to come.

It has come to my attention that a few students have been arriving then leaving school premises before the 9am school starting time. Rolls are marked early in the morning and parents sending their children to school this week are urged to ring the school to check their children are attending.

Thank you for your cooperation, understanding and assistance during this difficult time. We are attempting to manage the Term 2 student return to school in an orderly and safe manner being mindful of the HSC requirements of our Year 12 students and needs of all students.

We appreciate your patience as the staff work diligently to create additional learning packs for students that will begin to be distributed on Monday 4^th May. The school will communicate when each year group’s packs are ready to be collected via text message.

The learning packs that were distributed during Term One are filled with a range of learning materials from faculties at Bass High School, including classwork and assessment tasks. It is important that students begin to submit this work as soon as possible so that teachers are able to provide timely and meaningful feedback.

To accommodate for the safe collection of work from students, there will be boxes in the School Hall labelled with the day of the week. On each day, members of the school community will be able to access the submission boxes between the hours of 1PM & 3PM. The school will provide paper envelopes for the work to be placed in and ask that the person submitting the work write the name of the student clearly on the front of each envelope. There will also be school staff in the hall to assist with any inquiries.

We will not be able to accept any form of plastic (including folders and plastic sleeves) in the learning pack submission boxes, as we are trying to eliminate any chances of cross contamination for our school community. COVID-19 can only survive on porous substances like paper for up to 24 hours, but can survive on plastic for longer periods of time.

At the end of each day, these boxes will be quarantined for 24-36 hours. They will then be reopened, sorted and distributed to staff for feedback. Teachers will work to have the learning materials returned to students as soon as possible and may communicate feedback via phone calls, online meetings and/or mailing the marked work home.

The school hall will be open for the submission of completed work every afternoon from Thursday 30^th April. If you are unable to make it to the school between the hours of 1PM and 3PM please contact us to make alternate arrangements.

Important message from the principal re gradual return to school in term 2

Dear parents / guardians,

The return to school announcement by the NSW Premier yesterday means a gradual return over Term 2 from the 11^th May. This will allow social distancing procedures to occur with some students not necessarily being taught by their regular Teacher.

Two staff development days are scheduled next week for Monday (27/4) and Tuesday (28/4), these are pupil free days. From Wednesday 29^th April – Friday 8^th May the school will be open for vulnerable students and children of essential workers.

From Monday 11^th May students will be rostered for one day a week and then two days a week from Monday 25^th May. A full return of five days will occur on Monday 8^th June under social distancing procedures. It is envisaged that normal class structures will occur from Monday 22^nd June. Any spike in the COVID-19 curve could adjust this time schedule based on NSW Government directives.

Online learning will continue for students during the days they are not attending school. The rostered student timetable will be developed next week and posted on our school website, Facebook and Sentral Portal.

Please reach out to the school if you require any further support or assistance next week. Students working from learning packages should have their work ready for teacher feedback next week. You will be notified of handing in of work procedures early next week.

NSW students to transition back to the classroom in Term 2

NSW school students will gradually transition back to the classroom during Term 2 as the Government continues to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Minister for Education and Early Childhood Learning Sarah Mitchell outlined the plan for students attending NSW public schools to progressively return to face-to-face learning in week three of Term 2.

Ms Berejiklian said health advice continues to be that schools remain open, and parents, teachers and students can be confident that school is safe place.

“We are grateful to all families who kept their children home from school at the end of Term 1 and to teachers who worked tirelessly to deliver education online,” Ms Berejiklian said.

“This allowed us critical time to prepare our schools to develop better online learning options and for considering additional hygiene measures to allow schools to return.

“We know that nothing is more important than a child’s education, and we must begin to return our students to their classrooms in a considered way.

“Under these changes, from week three of Term 2, every student will be attending school for one day a week.

“We will look to increase the number of days students are at school in a staged way and hope to have all children back at school full-time by Term 3.

“I’d like to thank the Catholic and Independent schools for working with the NSW Government at this time, as well as staff, including teachers, principals and cleaners, for working so hard to prepare for a resumption of school.

“I’d also like to thank parents for what has been a tough month, often juggling working from home and caring for children. We hope the partial resumption of on campus learning will provide some much needed relief to those families.”

During the first stage of on-campus learning, parents will be encouraged to keep their children home except on their allocated day of face-to-face learning. Initially, about a quarter of a school’s students are expected to be on site at any one time. The specific days students will be required to attend school each week will vary from school to school and will be clearly communicated to parents.

Classes will be split across schools, allowing schools to appropriately social distance students and teachers.

As always, schools will remain open for students who need them and no child will be turned away from school.

Ms Mitchell said careful consideration had been given to support the school community, providing clarity and certainty on the path forward.

“This plan provides a clear path that balances community concerns with a need to deliver continuity of quality education,” Ms Mitchell said.

“Hand sanitiser will be available in all classrooms and provisions are in place for at-risk teachers to work from home. Drop off, pick up, recess and lunchtimes will also be staggered to ensure social distancing.”

In addition to the staged return to school, the NSW Government has committed up to $95.7 million to help keep casual and temporary school staff engaged in active work during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Our casual and temporary teachers and other non-teaching staff across NSW schools are critical to our education system, and will help ensure the educational outcomes for our students during this staged return,” Ms Mitchell said.

A cross-sector working group of teachers will also be established to report back to the Minister on recent innovations and educational developments assembled during the COVID-19 period that are suitable to support future educational delivery.

“It’s important that we have an inventory of the cutting edge teaching solutions and recognise the best efforts of our amazing NSW teachers during a difficult time,” Ms Mitchell said.

Teachers will have an additional day to prepare for Term 2 on Tuesday 28 April making the first day of term for students Wednesday 29 April.

To all Bass High School students and parents

The last few days of remote learning have been challenging for our students and their parents. As a school we have been working hard to get learning packages out to our Year 7 - 10 students, particularly our families that do not have access to the internet. Selected senior learning packages have been organised and an sms will be sent to families of these students when the learning packages are ready for collection.

We are currently organising procedures for work completed to be returned to the school for Teacher feedback. We will get back to you with information on how this will occur. Students using online learning platforms such as google classrooms will be able to receive immediate feedback from their Teachers. The hall is currently being used as our distribution centre for learning package picks ups. I would like to thank our students and parents for their patience over the time it took us to set this process up.

All assessments tasks due this week and next week will be pushed back into Term 2. I am in the process of adjusting assessment details for Years 7 - 12 to account for the current disruption to student learning. I will be cancelling all Year 7 - 10 exams that are usually scheduled in Term 2 and faculties are in the process of reviewing their assessment tasks to minimise the disruptions to student learning. A revised Year 11 and 12 Assessment Schedule booklet will be downloaded onto our school website with notification on our school Facebook page.

The NSW Department of Education's advice regarding schools is very clear. No child in NSW will be turned away from school.

Schools will remain open for parents who want their children to attend irrespective of their profession or working arrangements.

The decision to keep schools open has been made based on advice from NSW Health, which has not changed.

The department will provide continuity of learning for all students both on and off campus and the Premier, for practical reasons, has encouraged parents to keep their children at home if they could.

Schools will communicate directly with parents on what learning options are available using their communication methods such as the school website, newsletters, emails and other online tools.

New COVID-19 restrictions begin as schools move towards online learning

The NSW Government has taken significant new steps to increase restrictions across the state - triggering the next level of enforcement necessary to fight COVID-19.

Following the decisions made by National Cabinet, NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian confirmed the shutdown to protect NSW citizens.

"I understand many in the community are worried, and these changes will affect everyday lives, and may be upsetting," Ms Berejiklian said.

"But these decisions will make us all safer, they are taken with the health of all citizens in mind, and they must be taken now.

"If you have the capacity to work from home, you should do so."

In line with health advice, from midday today, the following non-essential activities and businesses will be temporarily shut down:

pubs, registered clubs
gyms, indoor sporting venues
cinemas, entertainment venues, casinos, and night clubs
restaurants and cafes will be restricted to takeaway and/or home delivery
religious gatherings, places of worship (excluding small weddings and funerals that comply with the 4m2 rule, which can proceed).

It is important to note essential gatherings at places such as hospitals, workplaces, constructions sites and for public transport are exempt and will continue.

As confirmed last night by the Prime Minister schools will remain open, based on health advice, which has not changed.

But from tomorrow, in NSW, for practical reasons, parents are encouraged to keep their children at home.

"Because nearly 30 per cent of children are already being kept out of school, for practical reasons NSW is encouraging parents to keep their children at home," Ms Berejiklian said.

"This will ensure there is only one unit of work, whether the student is at home or at school.

"No child will be turned away from school."

Schools remain open

The health advice on schools remains unchanged. Our Chief Medical Officers indicate that our schools should remain open for education provision at this time.

The Government and Department are encouraging you to keep your child at home from Tuesday 24 March to contribute to supporting the community response to COVID-19. The school’s doors will remain open for those students whose parents are in the essential services or who are vulnerable.

As updated expert information comes to the Department, who are in constant liaison with NSW Health we will keep you informed of any impact on school operations.

Supporting continuity of learning for all students

Our staff have been working hard to develop a suite of learning resources and options for students to undertake from home. The Department has developed and will continue to develop resources and offer professional learning to help teachers with this task.

Whether your child is at school or at home, the aim is for all students to access the consistent learning content provided by our school. This may mean sending work home, either with physical materials or by email, or by making use of one of our online platforms at our school.

Dear Parents,

As you are aware, we are in the midst of a COVID-19 pandemic. The situation in regard to COVID-19 continues to evolve and efforts are now focused on considered actions to slow the spread of the virus in the community. If any families, students or staff return from an overseas destination from the 16^th March 2020, they must self-isolate for a period of 14 days.

With this in mind, and in accordance with advice received from NSW Health, we have discussed the following three actions with students to help manage the spread:

Wash your hands with soap regularly and thoroughly.
Sneeze into your elbow or a tissue, disposing of the tissue straight away.
Stay at home if you are unwell. Students will need to be sent home if they are at school and appear unwell during the day.

As a school, we will also be following guidelines from the Department of Education and implementing some social distancing measures, including:

Cancelling all school assemblies and year meetings until further notice. Important messages will be communicated with students through classroom announcements.
Cancelling excursions outside of our local community until further notice.
Cancelling all regular school events including external sporting activities until further notice.

We will cancel our Year 10 Information evening and Parent Teacher evening that were due to take place in the last few weeks of this term. We will endeavour to keep you updated with other such cancellations via Facebook and our school website.

I ask that you pay close attention to your child’s health. It is imperative that you keep your child at home and seek medical advice if they exhibit flu-like symptoms including a high temperature and/or respiratory difficulties.

The NSW Department of Education is introducing proactive measures to limit the impact of COVID-19 in our schools.

Mark Scott, Secretary of the Department of Education today announced that schools would adopt social distancing measures requiring them to cancel assemblies, excursions, travel, some events and conferences.

Mr Scott said these measures are precautionary and designed to reduce exposure via non-essential gatherings.

“Schools have been a focus of the community and the government as the impacts of coronavirus have developed globally,” Mr Scott said.

“From Monday onwards, I expect school assemblies and substantial gatherings to be cancelled, along with all excursions.

“The community expects schools to be as safe as possible. We are implementing these measures to provide peace of mind for students, parents and staff.”

“These cancellations also extend to inter-school arts, sports, initiative activities and events.

All major Arts, Sports and Initiative activities and events will temporarily be ceased until further notice. This includes whole school sporting events and inter-school events involving three or more schools.

“Local inter-school sport and other activities, can proceed but we ask organisers to ensure that as far as possible, reasonable precautions are taken,” Mr Scott said.

“I trust our principals and staff to show leadership during this time.”

Schools will be provided with more detailed advice and suggestions on how they can adjust their day to day activities with minimal disruption.

Yr 9 Learn to Code: Minecraft with Python" workshop

Yesterday, Year 9 Game Development / Animation students and a few students from Year 7 and 12, attended an excursion to the Powerhouse museum where they participated in a "Learn to Code: Minecraft with Python" workshop.

They were assisted in writing Python code to control the characters and blocks inside Minecraft.

Students were very well behaved on the day and enjoyed getting to deepen their coding skills in the Minecraft world.

Creating Chances Future Pathways

Last week took some of our students to Fairfield Community Centre for two days of personal development, goal setting and capacity building with Creating Chances. Students enjoyed participating in a range of workshops that incorporated fitness, game playing and seminars, all designed to re-orient their thinking to goals beyond the high school setting.

It was a wonderful opportunity for students to build friendships with their peers at Chester Hill HS & IEC, as well as reflecting on what their goals were and how they could achieve them.

Bass High Digs Deep for the RSPCA

Thank you to all for your kind donations for the SRC RSPCA drive. SRC students along with Ms Winter, Ms Ghossain and myself visited the shelter today to donate the collected items and have a tour around the facility. A big thank you to Grace and Ingrid for driving and packing their cars full of donations!

The Sydney RSPCA shelter has been in operation for over 40 years and until recently was the largest in Australia (a shelter in QLD has just surpassed it as they opened a reptile centre). We saw lots of very cute fluffy cats, dogs and rabbits as well as livestock and birds all up for adoption. The students learned a lot about animal welfare and the importance of being a responsible pet owner.

Bass High’s donation of $470 was made online and our bags of donations today were very well received!

Focus Graduation with ABCN

Selected students at Bass High participated in the ABCN Focus program that connected students to Macquarie Bank and Optus. On 6 occasions students were expected to partake in group discussions with company mentors on key employability skills and the effectiveness of motivation and interpersonal communications to enhance leadership within a workplace. A big thanks goes to Mrs Ghossain, the ABCN facilitators, Macquarie Bank & Optus mentors. Congratulations to the students who committed to the program and graduated today.

Bass High School hosted the final Bankstown AECG (Aboriginal Education Consultation Group) meeting for the year, last Thursday in the JLC. The meeting went very well and I was excited to let the group know of many awesome things we have done or are doing here at Bass for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.

The meeting allows local schools and community members to network and pass around ideas to improve Aboriginal education. We spoke of engaging programs for our students that will begin next year, ideas of ways to reconnect students with attendance issues and up coming opportunities for all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in the Bankstown community.

28TH ANNUAL MIL-PRA EXHIBITION 2019

This Saturday is the opening ceremony for the 28th Annual Mil-Pra Aboriginal Art Exhibition at Casula Powerhouse.

This year Bass High has entered two group works, one done by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students 7-11 and one by SU1. Both groups should be very proud of the outcomes of these paintings completed back in October.

I have also entered an artwork of my own in the adult section of the exhibition. Last year I was fortunate enough to win the Mil-Pra award with my art work “Hear my mothers stories” which was used for this years invitation. (See at the bottom of this email)

I wanted to share some photo’s and send an invite out to anyone who is free on Saturday to come check out the amazing display of artworks and be there for the awarding ceremony which will begin at 2pm. (fingers crossed)

There will also be food and cultural performances to open the ceremony.

SRC Fundraiser for the RSPCA

The SRC is very pleased to report a profit of $470! This will be donated directly to the RSPCA on our visit to the shelter next week.

A huge thank you to all staff for your support of our SRC today, for coming to buy a cake or donating towards the cause, for assisting at the stall and for letting students out of class with the set up/clean up. Days like these are always such a positive experience for our students and couldn’t be done without your help. A great outcome like this definitely helps show our SRC students that their hard work is valued!

We will be collecting cat and dog treats/toys/food up until this Friday 29th November.

Yr 8 Art Excursion

On 21st November Art students from Years 8 to 12 visited the Art Gallery of NSW and the Botanical Gardens on an inspiration tour. Congratulations to Hiba El Ayoubi for tonight receiving a 2019 Jason Clare MP Community Service Award!

“Hiba is a dedicated and caring student committed to improving the experiences of all students at Bass High School as well as many others in our local community. Hiba served as SRC President during 2019 and has been elected as School Captain for 2020 as she starts Year 12.

During 2019, Hiba helped to run multiple fundraising initiatives at Bass High School including "Go Pink" Day where the school raised approximately $800 for breast cancer research. A major contribution of Hiba's work this year was focused on organising a fundraiser for local charity The Movement who help people experiencing homelessness throughout Sydney. Under Hiba's leadership, Bass HS raised over $1000 in funds for The Movement as well as an entire 4WD's worth of food and clothing in donated goods. Hiba also worked at a local childcare in Chester Hill as part of her community work placement at school and was praised for her compassion and cultural understanding shown towards children, parents and the local community.

As Hiba begins her role as School Captain, she wishes to focus on improving access to and understanding of mental health services available to teenagers. Hiba is an outstanding role model to all students at Bass High School and our wider community.”

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

56th Remembrance Service - 7th Australian Division AIF Association

On Saturday 12th of October at 11.00hrs our School Captain Jordan and Vice Captain Ali as well as our Principal Mr Taetolu attended the 56th Remembrance Service of the 7th Division AIF Association commemorating 77 years since the Victories of Milne Bay, Kokoda Track, Buna and the Battle of Beaches. 2nd AIF 1940-1945.

The boys were asked to unveil the plaque for the US 32nd Red Arrows. They met with guest of honour Professor The Honourable Dame Marie Bashir AD, CVO (former governor of NSW) and of course with Mr Dick Payten OAM, President of the 7th Division.

Congratulations to both Jordan and Ali for their attendance and for doing such a wonderful job in representing Bass High School. Many of the guests commented and congratulated them on their presence and on representing the youth of the area with such pride.

Message from Acting Principal Mr Martin Toaetolu

My name is Martin Toaetolu and I have been successful in being appointed to Acting Principal at Bass High School for 2019 following the retirement of the Principal David Horton. I consider it an honour to serve this school and its community to build upon the legacy of David Horton and past leaders.

I am motivated to ensure that our students are equipped with the relevant knowledge and skills they require to engage successfully with learning opportunities and jobs that they find themselves in. The school exit position is influenced by the expertise and hard work of their teachers. I will be supporting the ongoing development of our teachers to meet the changing and diverse needs of our students.

I am the child of two Samoan parents who moved to New Zealand where I grew up and began my education. My mother was a primary school teacher in Samoa who would read to me and my siblings developing in us a love for reading. My surname is pronounced TOE – EYE – TOH – LOU and it was my Grandfather’s name that I carry as part of my identity and his legacy.

I have been at several schools that include Canley Vale High, Robert Townson High, Eagle Vale High, Granville South Creative and Performing Arts High, Elizabeth Macarthur High and James Meehan High School. The experiences gained in a senior leadership role have provided me with the skills and knowledge necessary to lead Bass High School.

I look forward to meeting the challenges of the Principal role at Bass High School and working with and alongside the school community of students, staff and parents to continue building a better learning and teaching environment for all.

Bass High Fundraiser for the Homeless

On Friday 2nd August, Bass High School is hosting a fundraiser for local charity The Movement. The Movement works in our local area and throughout NSW to deliver hot meals and much needed items to those in need such as homeless youth, people and families.

Students are invited to wear mufti and bring a gold coin donation on Friday to support this event. There will also be an assembly held with guest speakers reflecting on their personal experiences with homelessness, and a sausage sizzle, drinks and cookies for sale at Breaks 1 and 2.

Bass HS is also collecting donations to gift to the charity, including non-perishable foods, toiletries and good quality second hand clothing.

We look forward to your support, any donations can be dropped off at Bass High School before Friday!

It is with sadness that I say farewell to this wonderful school and community as I approach retirement after 37 years of teaching in this great system we call public education.

It has been the privilege of my professional life to have been the Principal of this great school, to work with and support some truly outstanding students, staff, wonderful parents and the most amazing community. As teachers our rewards are simple – we rejoice when we see our students learn, when we see the spark of understanding that lights enthusiasm and passion and unlocks talent – and we have, and have had, some wonderfully talented students here at this school over the years. We celebrate just as much for the student who achieves a remarkable HSC result (and there have been plenty of those over the years) to the ones who stick it out, work hard and make their way in life. I have enjoyed and sometimes marveled at your enthusiasm and energy and confess that I haven’t always been able to keep up with that energy.

I was very happy to see Mr Martin Toaetolu appointed as your acting Principal and I know the school is in very capable and experienced hands with a passionate and dedicated leader.

Mr Toaetolu will begin his appointment from Monday 29^th of July 2019.

Targeted Learning Program - Taronga Zoo

Aya and Monique visited Taronga Zoo to explore a plethora of different career pathways available if they want to work with animals after school. They started the day with a tour of the Taronga Institute of Science and Learning where they learned about disease management, animal enrichment design and study pathways facilitated on site by the zoo. The students were also lucky enough to meet a five month old Wombat and a Spotted Python.

Aya and Monique spoke to teachers that work in the living classrooms at Taronga, keepers that feed and care for the animals and other staff that work to maintain operations at the zoo, including guest services and accomodation. The girls were lucky enough to have a personal tour of the Tiger exhibition where they got inside information about the Sumatran Tiger cubs that were born at Taronga in January this year.

SU4 are studying Stage 6 English Life Skills: Exploring places and people.

At the moment they are reading Rabbit Proof Fence and are learning about Aboriginal Culture.

As part of NAIDOC week celebrations Ms Leverett came into class and worked with SU4 and SU1 in providing cultural understanding by bringing in artefacts and doing an art class whilst explaining the history of aboriginal culture.

Refugee Week was wonderful opportunity for Bass High to celebrate the contribution refugees make to our school and our society, while raising awareness, remembering and honouring the often perilous journey that refugees have taken to reach Australia.

Food is one of the greatest ways we can bring people together and share our cultures with others. That is why this year’s theme for Refugee Week is ‘A World of Stories’ where we are bringing food to the focus and asking you to ‘Share a meal, share a story…’

Through storytelling we also have the chance to educate our community to better understand the courage and contribution that refugees make in our society.

It was an honour to hear from former Bass High student Hamoyoun Hatif who spoke very movingly to a school assembly about his experience as a refugee. We are very proud of Hamoyoun, now studying at Sydney University, and the many students like him, who are already making an amazing contribution to their community.

ASPIRE UNSW CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION (CSI)

UNSW ASPIRE welcomed a group of Year 9 students from Bass High School to watch a fabricated crash scene. Students were then put into groups to investigate the crash scene as Lawyers, Engineers, Scientists etc… So many careers were projected through the activities and students were able to solve the crash scene in their teams and present to the rest of the groups.

On Friday 14th June, Jasmin stepped into the Wellbeing Hub Beauty Studio and got a Pop Art Makeover. With the help of her official photographer, Ivana, Jasmin found the best lighting at Bass HS and took over 100 images for her Art major work. Jasmin is working to create feminist inspired representation of Andy Warhol's 10 print portfolio of Mick Jagger (1975).

Creative and Active Kids vouchers now available

Creative kids can now put a $100 voucher towards extra-curricular creative activities outside of school.

Together with Active Kids, this program aims to encourage more NSW children to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities such as coding, languages, circus, performing arts and visual arts.

Parents can apply for one $100 voucher for each child enrolled in school on the Creative Kids website and use it towards the cost of registration, participation or tuition. You just redeem the voucher with a registered provider in your area when making your payment.

This is a great opportunity for your child to become involved in a range of activities that will build on their education, growth and development.

Zone Cross Country

Down at Flinders Slopes, 35 Bass students are running in zone cross country. Carly Drury came first in her age group to qualify for regional at Camden on 13 June. Hussein Najim, Jayden Marques and Shaiyan Jaram ran an excruciatingly long 6km and the younger years are running 4kms now.

The wind is picking up, we’re hoping to escape rain and I’m very grateful for the support from Kerry Whyms and Lynette Pfeiffer.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21^st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Bass High School celebrated ANZAC Day by attending the Bass Hill RSL Dawn Service and holding a ceremony on the first day back at school, Tuesday 30th of April.

We had the priviledge to have in attendance a very special guest and friend of the school, Mr Dick Payten OAM, President of the 7th Division AIF who is 98 years of age.

Also in attendance were Ms Tania Mihailuk MP (State Member for Bankstown), Mr Ron Duckworth (President) and Mr Ian Kennedy from Bass Hill RSL sub-branch), Ms Christine Kingston and Mr Alan Rawlinson (Legacy), Mr Badih Habib (Vice President of the Bass High’s P&C) who have been great supporters of Bass High School.

My Community Project is a new NSW Government funding program that is all about local ideas, local projects and local decisions.

You can apply now for grants from $20,000 - $200,000 for projects that will make a difference to your community. Projects could include new playground equipment, sports facilities, paths or ramps to improve access, public art or a community service.

The local community can vote for their favourite projects in July and successful projects will be announced in September.

Last week we recognised our outstanding 2019 Student Leadership Teams at Bass High School in our Student Leadership Induction Ceremony. School Captains, School Vice Captains, SRC Presidents, SRC Vice Presidents, House Captains and SRC Members were all recognised with badges and certificates for stepping up into their various roles. We were also very lucky to have Tania Mihailuk MP - Member for Bankstown and Wayne Pearce in attendance as special guests.

Our leadership teams have been working tirelessly all term with great ideas to help further improve the school, and we are looking forward to what the future holds with these students leading. We thank all family members and guests for attending, as well as all staff who helped to make this event so special.

School Leaders Parliament

Last Thursday, Jason Clare MP (Federal Member for Blaxland) hosted a School Parliament at Bass High School for the SRC and School Captains where students debated on a bill to be passed. The bill was that Australia should become a republic - and it definitely got fired up! Students had lots of fun getting into character as members of the House of Representatives including taking on the roles of Prime Minister, Opposition Leader, Clerk, Speaker, Sergeant at Arms and more. Mr Clare was extremely helpful as he answered the many questions students had about parliamentary process and the upcoming federal election. We thank him greatly for his time!

2019 PCYC Fit For Work Graduation

Congratulations Daniel, Steven, Kahmaya, Kelvin, Ibrahim and Moussa for completing the 10wk Fit for Work program through Bankstown PCYC.

Students gained their: White Cards, First Aid certificates, Cert 1 in Retail, employment readiness with resume, cover letter and mock interview support. Some students also competed pre-apprenticeship courses and bootcamps in mechanics and bricklaying.

A special thanks to Constable Cisco and Glenn and the whole PCYC team for their hard work to ensure student attendance and developing a program that built student confidence and positive attitude to enhancing student morale, to be employable and respectable citizens in the community.

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.
If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.
Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.
Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

Women's Leadership Conference State Parliament House

On Thursday 7th March in celebration of International Women’s Day, Year 11 SRC members Katryse Nicholls and Sawsan Kashabech attended a Women’s Leadership Conference held at NSW Parliament. The day involved hearing from women in leadership positions from the Department of Parliamentary Services as well as female MPs Cate Faehrmann (Greens) and Courtney Houssos (Labor). The students attended a tour of the Legislative Council and were free to ask questions about government all day. It was an insightful and inspiring day, and both students left feeling motivated to continue working in their leadership positions as Bass HS.

Zone Swimming Carnival

On Wednesday 6th March Bass students competed in the zone swimming competition at Max Parker Leisure Centre in Revesby in the hope of qualifying for regional swim championships.

Angelina Spyropoulos from year 8 swam in many events (100m Butterfly with a fabulous PB, 100m and 50m Freestyle plus the 100m Backstroke and 100m Breaststroke).

The Lillis family always represent Bass well and both Josh and Natalie competed in 3 individual events and relays.

Jacob Newton swam several events placing second in the 100m Freestyle.

Two new competitors this year were Christian Heim and Justin Bradley who swam in individual Freestyle events plus the relays.

Finally were the year twelves- sport coaching students helped run the zone event with Macey Owens and Carly Drury swimming in Freestyle.

It was a successful week for Jayden Marques in the Support Unit who completed 1 week work experience at Cafe Devie in Homebush. He enjoyed the hands on experience working at the cafe. Homework Centre at Bass High School 2019

The Homework Centre runs during term on three afternoons per week in the library. All students are welcome to attend once they have provided a signed information and permission note with details of parent contact.

In 2019 the hours are:

Tuesdays: 2:30-4:00pm

Wednesdays and Thursdays: 3:00-4:30 pm

Students are free to attend as many sessions as they wish per week. They must sign in and out of each session and are not permitted to leave the library area during Homework Centre hours.

Teachers will attend on a roster basis with emphasis on providing students with a range of KLA expertise to draw from. A mathematics teacher will be present wherever possible, for example.

Disruptive behaviour is not tolerated and students who disturb the study of others will be removed from the library.

Students must be engaged in meaningful work. This can include homework, assignments, research and quiet reading. They may call on teachers for assistance whenever required.

Study groups are sometimes organised for a specific purpose or to prepare for examinations.

All students are welcome to attend.

Year 11 Ancient History students are currently learning about excavating historical sites and preserving archaeological sources found in our world. To demonstrate this, students were tasked with excavating their own ‘site’ in the form of a cookie to find valuable chocolate chip ‘artefacts’.

Students faced challenges real archaeologists do, such as excavating the ‘artefacts’ without destroying them and also attempting to best preserve the ‘site’ afterwards. But the real challenge proved to be resisting the temptation to eat the cookies mid-excavation!

Bass High School Captain Selection Process 2019

Year 12 students have been invited to apply for the role of Bass High School Captain for 2019. A total of four positions will be available to the successful applicants. These will be TWO School Captains and TWO Vice Captains.

Year 12 students interested in applying for School Captain will be given an application form during Week 2. This form asks them to provide evidence of their leadership experience and commitment to Bass High School.

After their applications have been reviewed by a panel of Bass High School staff, successful applicants will be invited to deliver a speech to the student body on why they would make an outstanding school captain. This assembly will be held in the hall during Week 4 and all parents/caregivers of the nominated students will be invited to attend.

At the assembly, the students and staff at Bass High School will vote in an anonymous ballot for their school captain preference. The applicants with the 1^st and 2^nd most votes will be announced as School Captain, and the applicants with the 3^rd and 4^th most votes will be announced as Vice Captains. All other applicants will be invited to join the SRC.

The role of school captain involves being an outstanding role model to all students within the school, upholding the values and attitudes of Bass High School at all times, as well as representing the school at formal occasions held within and outside of the school.

I am writng to inform you of some changes to the school finishing times for 2019. These changes are a result of the decision for Bass High School to rejoin the Grade Sport Competition. This will give students from Year 8 to Year 10 the opportunity to compete in various sports against schools within our zone. As has been the case this year, Sport Day for 2019 will remain on a Tuesday for Year 7 to 10, with students in these years expected to wear full sport uniform on sport day and full school uniform on other days. Students in Year 11 and 12 will be expected to wear full school uniform every day.

Yr 7 Science Excursion - ASPIRE Program

On 8th of November a group of year 7 students attended a Science excursion to the Sydney Observatory as part of the ASPIRE Program in conjunction with University of New South Wales. The students participated in an astronomy workshop and looked at objects in our night sky inside a planetarium. The students got to use the telescope to see the Sun’s prominence and Venus in the crescent phase.

SU "Coco Cafe"

Last Friday on the the 30th of November, Su1 performed their play "Coco Cafe" based on classroom activities. Issues covered on each Table's conversation included -phone texting, judging people, the drought, supporting each other, having a laugh etc.

A Film based on the concept of a Bass High Happy Day was premiered.

As well artworks from all Support classes were exhibited-themes ranging from Aboriginal Art, Robots, Tree Shadows, Organic Forms, Food etc

Yr 7 Swim School Program 2018

As part of our total school curriculum and the Water Safety priority of the NSW Government, the PD/H/PE Faculty is conducting the cumpulsory Year 7 Swim School for 2018.

Some of the aims are for the students to be educated in water safety, improve swimming skills, develop life saving skills (according to their abilities), know how to respond to an emergency situation at the beach and ocean awareness.

Sailors with DisABILITIES - Special Ed

On Monday the 5th of November, students from the Support Unit at Bass High went on an excursion. The excursion was to Rushcutters Bay to sail on a sailing boat. I was lucky enough to also attend. The organisation was Sailors with disABILITIES and our school raised over $650 for them through selling cakes and sausages. The sailing crew were very nice and taught us new skills. We had a wonderful time there. It was an experience of a lifetime! I would love to go again.

Bass High held a Remembrance Day Assembly and a wreath laying ceremony to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Armistice which ended the First World War (1914-18).

Members of Mr O’Brien’s Year 10 History class represented Bass at the AWM as we mark 100 years since the Armistice that ended World War 1.
We toured the exhibits including the dioramas, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and Eternal Flame. We left poppies beside the name of a soldier who died in the Great War at the Remembrance Wall.

2019 school budget allocations

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

TAFE Financial Services Course

“They were always engaged and asked a lot of questions - students who do this will do better ; it was good to see them have a go. This course helps students when applying for jobs, but it’s more than that; there are life skills and most importantly, knowledge. For instance, we look at the phenomenon of payday lending which can be an attractive but risky prospect for young earners. Students are also introduced to the workings of PAYG tax and make calculations as if completing their own tax returns.”

For the fourth consecutive year our students have completed the accredited TAFE Certificate One in Financial Services in the Library. This 10-hour course introduces students to consumer credit and provides insights into the world of personal finance and banking. For many it marks the beginning of a long and productive association with the TAFE sector. We acknowledge the generosity and support of the Smith Family in making this course and other programs available to our students and look forward to working together with them in 2019.

The students will visit the Victor Chang Institute (a world leader in cardiac research) later in the year as part of their award.

7th Division Service Commemorating 76 Years since the victories of Milne Bay and the Kokoda Track

On Saturday 27th of October, SRC Students Jack and Cynthia accompanied by Mr Azar represented Bass High School at the Service of the 7th Division AIF Commemorating 76 years since the Victories of Milne Bay and the Kokoda Track at the Remembrance Driveway on the Hume Highway.

Jack and Cynthia were exemplary, they chatted to former governor Professor the Hon Marie Bashir AD, CVD and Mr Dick Payten OAM, President of the 7th Division. Also in attendance Colonel Michael Miller RFD representing The Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Ret'd) Governor of NSW, Ms Tania Mihailuk MP, Member for Bankstown and government representatives.

Mr Dick Payten was as always, very happy that our students and our school continue to support the 7th Division. It was a wonderful day.

On Thursday 13 September, Bass High School participated in the R U OK? initiative to promote awareness of mental health and to encourage people to seek assistance and support. Our Year 10 SRC presented to the students at a whole school assembly and shared some key information on R U OK?, including some strategies on how to seek support within the school. In addition to this, during break time, all students had the opportunity speak to their year advisors and other members of the school wellbeing team and to also share some positive messages and experiences at the R U OK? stations that were organised for the event. This was a productive day for all and a great opportunity to remind students that support is always available to them, at school.

Many thanks to the Bass Staff who supported the juniors at Campbelltown. The boys lost but not through lack of support. It was wet, cold and a long day but wonderful to see our school team at a state finals in a proper stadium with plenty of parents and ex students there.

Tech jobs are the future

Out of 160 graduate jobs offered at Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) this year, 60 were targeted to technology. So is technology now shaping our future?

If so, what can one do to prepare themselves for the future occupations that may not even exist today?

Female students at Bass High School had the opportunity to attend CBA to hear about the latest innovations and future careers in technology, cyber security, data analysis and finance. It was so important for the students to realise the necessity to study science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) subjects to prepare their foundation to further themselves in the careers of the future. Zone swimming carnival 2018

14 students proudly represented Bass High School at the zone swimming carnival at Revesby pools on Monday 5 March.

Reece Tomkinson enjoyed his last ever school's zone carnival and qualified for regional in all his events. Jacob Newton, Kevin Pham, Dylan Attard and Kara Bradley all kindly agreed to swim above their age groups to make relay teams.

Zone is certainly challenging for swimmers as 12 different schools compete in various events over 100m and 200m. Well done to all who competed!

Zonta club of Sydney's West International Women's Day breakfast 2018

International Women's Day is a celebration of the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women and a call-to-action to progress gender equality. On 8 March, three students attended the Zonta Club of Sydney West's International Women's Day breakfast, at Bankstown Sports Club.

Our Year 10 citizenship award recipient was Carly Drury and our young men standing strong against domestic violence, Rida Nahra, represented Bass High School, along with the support from their peer, Suhaib Nashabe. Our award recipients took part in a candle ceremony while all the attendees pledged their support for women's equality. All three students represented Bass High School with pride and dignity.

Bass High School swimming carnival

Bass High School's swimming carnival this year was quite a momentous occasion. Firstly, it saw the return of a whole school swimming carnival rather than competitors only. Secondly, there was a return to the house system of banks (blue), flinders (green), hume (yellow) and parkes (red).

The response to the re-introduction of the house system by both staff and students was overwhelming. The carnival was a sea of house colours and the house spirit and rivalries was infectious.

The house captains did a magnificent job leading the house chants with hume being the winner of the house chant competition towards the end of the day.

The house relays by both staff and students and the big splash competition were highlights of the day. The house relays were hotly contested, encouraged by loud cheering from everyone on the side of the pool. The students relay was won by parkes and the staff relay was won by banks.

It was a day that was enjoyed by all. The carnival had a very positive atmosphere that left everyone in high spirits at the end of the day.

Fantastic open night at Bass High School

Our open night on Wednesday 28 February was a spectacular success with over 200 parents and prospective students attending. The night showcased the many wonderful academic, sport, arts and wellbeing programs we run at Bass High School to support student success.

Highlights were the hospitality display (students and parents enjoyed some great food), dance and music performances and tours of our school farm (a unique and very popular feature of our school).

Former students Chloe and Houda spoke with great pride and passion about how Bass High School has supported them to achieve their goals. Congratulations to George on winning the iPad competition!

Safe people, safe place

The safety and wellbeing of our children is paramount. As parents and carers we can't always be with our children to advise and protect them. When out and about, children can be confronted with situations where good decision-making is vital. With this in mind, advising our children with appropriate responses to certain situations will help them avoid trouble and danger.

Here are some simple tips to give your children for when they are out and about.

Protect your child walking home

This includes:

always identifying safe places on the way home from school
not stopping and talking to people you don't know—go straight home or to your intended destination
always finding a safe place if you feel frightened—this includes schools, shops, churches or police/fire/ambulance stations and tell them that you are frightened
never getting into a car with someone you don't know.

Protect your child on public transport

This includes:

never travelling in isolated areas—find crowded carriages, guard's compartment (marked with a blue light) or at the front of the bus
always trying to travel in group of friends if possible.

Protect your child when in public spaces

This includes:

always carrying a contact number for your parents—on a card attached to your clothing, written on your arms or in your phone
not walking away from family or friends without teling them where you are going, when you'll be back and who you are with
always walking away from fights or arguments, unpleasant or aggressive behaviour and take your friends with you
remember, always tell your parents, carer or teacher if something has happened.

Sydney Flight College excursion

On Thursday 15 February 2018, 19 students from Bass High School had the opportunity to visit Sydney Flight College. They were addressed by a flight instructor, Matt, who discussed with them the pathways to becoming a pilot and the necessary requirements needed. They all had a turn in a flight simulator where they tested their flying skills. It was a wonderful morning for interested students to experience first hand a career among the clouds. A special thanks to Ms Winter for taking some great photos.

Minimum standards required for awarding Higher School Certificate

Bass High School staff are actively engaged in ensuring that our students meet the new minimum standards required for the awarding of the Higher School Certificate (HSC).

From 2020, students will need to demonstrate suitable standards in reading, writing and numeracy before they can be awarded the HSC.

There are several ways to pass these skills tests starting with the Year 9 National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN).

Bass High School will be providing more opportunities during the year.

Our first testing session saw all 18 of our students pass at their first attempt. Those requiring support will receive it during the year from the mathematics, english and learning support faculties.
