High Potential and Gifted Education

Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may shine in creativity, thinking, leadership or sport.

At our school, we recognise and nurture these strengths early. We support advanced learners with great lessons and activities to help them grow and thrive.

Why choose us for your high potential or gifted child?

Recognising potential and developing talent

Our teachers find potential and nurture our students to be the best they can be.

Tailored lessons

Each student has different abilities. Teachers respond to each student’s ability by providing extra challenges and extension activities to keep learning exciting and engaging.

Rich opportunities and activities

Students can take part in opportunities to develop their talent in the arts, sport, leadership and more.

Opening doors to wider experiences

Our students can participate in a wide range of state-wide opportunities that aim to extend and enrich student potential.

What is high potential and gifted education?

High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.

We do this through:

Our high potential and gifted education opportunities

Our students engage with HGPE in the classroom, in our school and across NSW.

In our classrooms

At Bass High School, our classrooms are inclusive environments where every student is encouraged to think deeply, take intellectual risks, and strive for excellence. We are committed to recognising and nurturing high potential and gifted students within a culture of high expectations and support.

  • Teachers engage in ongoing professional learning to address the diverse learning needs of all students, including those who are high potential and gifted.
  • Supportive classroom environments foster a strong sense of belonging and promote risk-taking, creativity, and collaboration through hands-on projects and targeted programs.
  • Students take ownership of their learning by setting goals, reflecting on their progress, and celebrating growth.
  • Impact is measured through student work samples, reflective practices, and regular progress monitoring.
Across our school

Our school recognises that every student is an individual and provides flexible and diverse opportunities to explore and develop strengths beyond the classroom. Excellence underpins all aspects of school life. We celebrate diversity, innovation, and student voice, creating a community where every learner can thrive and reach their full potential.

  • All students, including high potential and gifted students, are encouraged to take on leadership roles through the Student Representative Council, mentoring programs, peer coaching, and the leadership of major school events, including ANZAC Day, Remembrance Day, and NAIDOC assemblies.
  • We partner with community organisations to create authentic opportunities for student voice and advocacy.
  • External Vocational Education and Training (EVET) and school-based VET courses connect students with industry experts and positive role models, supporting pathways aligned to individual interests and aspirations.
  • Talent is recognised, celebrated, and extended through sporting teams, multicultural celebrations, performance events, music ensembles, and opportunities for students to lead sound, lighting, production, and media.
Across NSW and beyond

Students at Bass High School participate in a wide range of state-wide and external programs designed to extend and enrich student potential.

  • The school continues to prioritise sporting participation across multiple competitions, including gala days, Combined High Schools knock-out competitions, and representative pathways through zone, regional, and state carnivals.
  • Students engage in partnership programs with the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) and the University of New South Wales (UNSW), expanding opportunities for critical thinking, leadership development, and future pathways.
