Technological and applied studies

Technological and applied studies (TAS) is mandatory for all students in Year 7 and 8. Students can also select from a range of elective TAS subjects.

In TAS, students develop knowledge, understanding and skills through a design and production process using a range of tools, materials and techniques in theory and practical lessons.

The continuum of technology learning is:

  • mandated from Kindergarten to Year 8 through Science and Technology K-6 and Technology Mandatory Years 7-8 syllabuses
  • based on students becoming increasingly sophisticated in their ability to apply knowledge, skills and understanding to design and produce solutions
  • optional for student specialisation in high school through a range of syllabuses addressing particular technologies and aspects of design.

Years 7 and 8

In Years 7 and 8, Bass High School technology mandatory students will learn to develop skills in:

  • Finding a solution to a challenge, need or problem, using a design process with technology specialisations
  • Responding to opportunities for design solutions requiring a product environment or system
  • Integrating the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) to document all stages of the student's design process into a project portfolio.

Years 9 and 10 electives

In Years 9 and 10, students will use what they have learned in Years 7 and 8 to choose an area of specialisation to further their practical skills and deepen their theoretical understanding of applied technology. Students can choose from electives such as:

  • Industrial Technology (multimedia)
  • Design and Technology
  • Food Technology
  • Industrial Technology Timber
  • Information and Software Technology.

Years 11 and 12

When students start Year 11, they formally commence the preliminary phase of their NSW Higher School Certificate (HSC). Throughout Stage 6, students enrolled in technology and applied studies (TAS) subjects must attend all classes, refine their application of technology to meet the needs of complex project situations, evaluate key components of the project lifecycle, contribute to the learning environment of their cohort, as well as completing their assessment tasks to the best of their ability.

Bass High School offers a range of TAS subjects incorporating academic units that can stand alongside vocational education and training (VET) competencies. Students may select from:

  • Construction (VET)
  • Design and Technology
  • Food Technology
  • Hospitality (VET)
  • Industrial Technology Multimedia
  • Enterprise Computing
